We are Charlie and Tom Horrell, brothers and great mates, who grew up in a close-knit family in rural Cambridgeshire with our parents and two sisters.
In our 20’s we both headed to the City where we found jobs in Lloyds of London. Here the daily uniform of dark suits and black brogues offered little individuality so ties were a way to reflect some personality. We struggled to find quality silk ties that appealed, the ones that we liked were beyond our price range and the remainder offered limited variety and originality.
We felt there was a gap in the market and found ourselves brainstorming ideas. Our aim was to create a range of high quality silk ties that we would want to wear with fresh colours and small quirky designs – something fun, at a price that we would be willing to pay.
Around this time, Tom’s job relocated him to Bermuda. The commuter train was replaced with a five-minute drive down the coast on a scooter. Oceans were clear blue, sand pink, houses pastel greens, blues and yellows and every one had a white roof. Charlie soon visited and whilst out on a boat, floating in the ocean and drinking ‘Dark ‘n Stormies’, inspired by the colours and lifestyle of Bermuda, we decided to take our ideas to the next level…
“Bringing the colours of Bermuda to London” would introduce a vibrant, exciting and fresh palette. To inject a lighter hearted feel to the designs, we based our initial offering on word play to add a touch of humour and reflect a laid-back style.
Our first idea was ‘gooseberry fool’: We loved it!
Gooseberry Fool was born.
